The North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association of attorneys dedicated to protecting the rights of individuals in the State of North Carolina.
The NCATL was formed 40 years ago by a small group of trial lawyers – and today has grown to almost 4,000 members. We represent those injured by the wrongdoing of others, workers, the disabled, people struggling with family problems or debt, consumers, and people accused of crimes.
We fight to protect the interest of all North Carolinians with our work in the General Assembly, where we have achieved success in a wide range of issues important to our citizens:
- A civil justice system open and accessible to everyone
- A workers' compensation system that is fair to injured workers
- Increased funding for indigent criminal defense and the justice system overall
- Open file discovery that protects the integrity of our criminal justice system
The NCATL provides a valuable range of services for attorneys in our state, holding numerous seminars that offer the local legal community an opportunity to learn about important updates in legislation. The NCATL is also very active in public service, producing the Wade Edwards Mock Trial Program, which gives high school students the chance to learn about courtroom and legal procedures, as well as other public education initiatives.
The Academy's Legal Affairs Program monitors developments in legal ethics and offers assistance to attorneys throughout the state, including help with briefs and oral arguments.
