Mesothelioma Statistics |
Mesothelioma Information: Mesothelioma is a serious cancer that occurs in individuals exposed to asbestos. Mesothelioma victims have either inhaled or swallowed asbestos fibers which then travel through the lung and become lodged in the pleura (the thin, saran wrap-type membrane lining the lungs.) Each year 2,500 to 4,000 patients in the U.S. are diagnosed with mesothelioma and asbestos related diseases. The tragic part of those suffering from asbestos exposure and mesothelioma is that It Was Preventable. Scores of corporations that manufactured and profited from the sale of asbestos containing products knew the health hazards as early as the 1920's. During the same period, there were alternatives to asbestos available. Ignoring the deadly risks and repercussions associated with asbestos, corporations chose to sell and recklessly use it through the 1980's. These manufacturers did not advise workers of the dangers of asbestos and consequently, many Americans have unnecessarily and tragically contracted Mesothelioma. We have provided the following information as an educational resource for those suffering from the dangerous effects of asbestos, and those individuals and families coping with mesothelioma. We have included information about mesothelioma, also known as asbestos cancer, asbestos exposure, at-risk occupations, medical information, including symptoms, types of cancer, diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options, and legal guidance. |
