Does The Internet Replace Books/ CD’s?
  • Not a replacement, but a great supplement - Narrowing searches prior to going to Westlaw, etc.
  • Caselaw and statutory research are still more comprehensive on Lexis/Westlaw
  • Books & CD’s are still needed - Few sites go back more than a few years (not to 1800’s).  No standardized system for citation. (Star Pagination - West claim). ** This may change
15
Does The Internet Replace Books/ CD’s?
  • Internet advantages include more current information, more general information, more contributors, & access from any location with virtually any equipment.

  • When using the Internet for research, check origin, dates and disclaimers.  E.G., NC statutes example. Current Lexis-Nexis Ad - “Why Surf When You Can Fly”
16
Examples Where The Net Is Preferable.
  • The World Trade Organization provides full text results of dispute settlement hearings.
  • There is a web site which details all tobacco related legislation.
  • There is a web site devoted to entertainment law issues.
  • Environmental Sites Which Point To Other Sites, e.g., each state and worldwide (schools, Sierra, white house, EDF, Environmental Law Reviews, law lists & listservs.
17
Secondary Sources Listserv Example
  • Question Posed: “Has anyone considered the risk, both practical and professional, of sending attorney-client privileged or otherwise confidential information via internet fax? On one level it should not be terribly different from sending a fax from machine to machine over telephone lines, since that is all that is happening on the internet. However, faxing over the internet at least in most cases involves a third-party fax server provider, where the confidential fax would be routed. In our case, we are considering a service offered by our local ISP which in turn probably uses a network of remote servers nearer the delivery point. The confidential fax, then would be stored on their respective servers. Thoughts?”
18
Real Life Examples

  • Firms settling cases by E-mail
  • Specific type of assistance needed - posted on Newsgroup

witnesses, locations of people, financial information on a company, all sorts of government regulation reference materials, IRS forms, forums such as this, discussion groups on every subject imaginable, background information, statistics on verdicts and settlements, etc.

Example - Listserv E-mail
  • I frequently have the need for information readily available on the Internet such as Statutes for the 50 United States, government forms and information for tax returns, inheritance tax return forms from various states, corporate information, price of stocks, locating transfer agent names for a particular stock, their addresses, instructions and phone numbers, obituaries, blue book values for automobiles, current value of savings bonds purchased many years ago, addresses and phone numbers of clerks of court and register of deeds in various counties and states, instructions for contacting the Federal Reserve Bank and forwarding bonds. These are merely a few of the sources I use on a regular basis. Listserv Contributor
