Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) refers to the use of estrogen and progestin for the treatment of symptoms related to menopause. It is also commonly referred to as opposed estrogen therapy. When HRT was first introduced to women decades ago, it was assumed the benefits outweighed the risks. Recent studies have proved those assumptions false in most cases.

Prempro is a prescription drug that combines estrogen and progestin into a single pill for HRT. Prempro Dangers

How It Works | Hormone replacement therapy:

  • Replaces estrogen, which naturally declines after menopause.
Has beneficial effects, such as promoting the amount of HDL ("good") cholesterol and decreasing the amount of LDL ("bad") cholesterol in the blood, but does not decrease heart disease.

  • May slow or stop the loss of bone mass and density (osteoporosis).

  • May increase bone density.

  • Maintains muscle tone of the vagina, reducing irritation.

  • Increases skin collagen levels, which decline as estrogen levels decline. Collagen is responsible for the stretch in the connective tissue of the pelvis. Declining levels of collagen lead to increased pressure on the urethra, urinary incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse.

The use of progestin with estrogen (including Prempro therapy):

  • Protects a woman who still has a uterus from the increased risk of endometrial cancer that occurs with estrogen-only therapy.

  • Causes menstrual symptoms and monthly withdrawal bleeding when progestin is used periodically (cyclic HRT).

Why It Is Used | Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may be used:

  • For short-term treatment when menopause causes bothersome symptoms, such as hot flashes.

  • As an estrogen/progestin patch (transdermal combination) by women with liver or gallbladder disease. Transdermal estrogen and progestin enter the bloodstream directly, without passing through the liver. The estrogen and progestin in pills must be processed by the liver before entering the bloodstream.

While some benefits have been found with hormone replacement therapy, namely relief from menopausal symptoms, serious and sometimes life threatening dangers have been associated with Prempro.

If you have suffered harmful effects from Prempro such as breast cancer, stroke or heart attack, you may be entitled to file a legal claim against the drugs maker for negligence in product labeling and marketing. Learn More about your Legal Rights.
