The domain business has been deregulated... For the first time, many different domain registrars are granting domain names. But there is a problem, the standard WHOIS domain search used on thousands of web sites is no longer accurate. Why? Because each domain registrar now keeps their own WHOIS database which doesn't include domains registered by competing registrars. Enter Betterwhois, a site that checks all registrars for domain status.

Domain name value, new domain suffixes and the happenings at Network Solutions and ICANN continue to make news. Regarding domain name value, names sell well if they have few letters & have revenue potential. Drugs.com reportedly sold for $823,456. Wallstreet.com sold for more than $1,000,000. Compaq, owner of altavista.digital.com, paid $3.35 million for the name AltaVista.com for its AltaVista search engine. Martindale reportedly paid significant money for lawoffice.com. A good source for pricing information is Great Domains.

It is a plus to have a key name. We learn, for example, that we can try www.clipart.com , www.drugs.com, www.law.com and often find high-quality sites that are quickly accessible that rather than wading through and waiting on search engines.

Regarding new suffixes and acquisition locations we have information listed the domain section of this site. The new names- .firm, .shop, .web, .arts, .rec, .info and .nom- will be available through independent CORE registrars CORE on five continents. The process is moving slowly. Core's update page states, "therefore, those who are interested in the availability of new top level domains should not expect any availability in the 1999/2000 2nd quarter time frame and perhaps much longer."

Currently available domain extensions include .com, .co, .uk, .tf, .ms, .gs, .net, .org, .uk, .ac, .vg, .ky, .org, .md, .sh, and .tc. We were pleased last month, for example, to acquire attorneys.to to add to several .com legal domains we have acquired for developmental purposes.

The .com extensions are the extensions of value. Several Internet companies are changing their names to .com (dot com.) Having a .com name provides inexpensive and easy access to your on-line brochure. Although .net has some value, the other extensions are basically "also rans" in the domain value race. Please see our domain area..

Massive Fiber Cut Pauses East-West Traffic By Max Smetannikov, Inter@ctive Week September 29, 1999 2:42 PM ET. At least four Internet service providers are experiencing severe traffic backlogs because of a massive fiber-optic cable cut that put out four OC-192 lines connecting data networks on the East and West Coasts. Industry sources told Inter@ctive Week that the cut was accidentally made by an unidentified gas company in Ohio around 12:30 EST today. The news is sending shockwaves through the networking community, with many carrier operators struggling to understand why, all of a sudden, their traffic is routed through London and Denmark. At least four Internet service providers are being affected by the outage. Various online sources have named AboveNet; GTE Internetworking; and MFS Communications, a WorldCom subsidiary, as ISPs hit the worst. (Read the remainder of the article at the above link.)
