- The domain business has been deregulated...
For the first time, many different domain registrars are granting domain
names. But there is a problem, the standard WHOIS domain search used on
thousands of web sites is no longer accurate. Why? Because each domain
registrar now keeps their own WHOIS database which doesn't include domains
registered by competing registrars. Enter Betterwhois,
a site that checks all registrars for domain status.

- Domain name value, new domain suffixes and
the happenings at Network Solutions and ICANN continue to make news.
Regarding domain name value, names sell well if they have few letters
& have revenue potential. Drugs.com reportedly sold for $823,456.
Wallstreet.com sold for more than $1,000,000. Compaq, owner of
altavista.digital.com, paid $3.35 million for the name AltaVista.com for
its AltaVista search engine. Martindale reportedly paid significant money
for lawoffice.com. A good source for pricing information is Great
Domains.
It is a plus to have a key name. We learn,
for example, that we can try www.clipart.com , www.drugs.com, www.law.com
and often find high-quality sites that are quickly accessible that rather
than wading through and waiting on search engines.
Regarding new suffixes and acquisition
locations we have information listed the domain
section of this site. The new names- .firm, .shop, .web, .arts, .rec,
.info and .nom- will be available through independent CORE registrars CORE
on five continents. The process is moving slowly. Core's
update page states, "therefore, those who are interested in the
availability of new top level domains should not expect any availability
in the 1999/2000 2nd quarter time frame and perhaps much longer."
Currently available domain extensions
include .com, .co, .uk, .tf, .ms, .gs, .net, .org, .uk, .ac, .vg, .ky,
.org, .md, .sh, and .tc. We were pleased last month, for example, to
acquire attorneys.to to add to several .com legal domains we have acquired
for developmental purposes.
The .com extensions are the extensions of
value. Several Internet companies are changing their names to .com (dot
com.) Having a .com name provides inexpensive and easy access to your
on-line brochure. Although .net has some value, the other extensions are
basically "also rans" in the domain value race. Please see our
domain area..

- Massive
Fiber Cut Pauses East-West Traffic By Max Smetannikov, Inter@ctive
Week September 29, 1999 2:42 PM ET. At least four Internet service
providers are experiencing severe traffic backlogs because of a massive
fiber-optic cable cut that put out four OC-192 lines connecting data
networks on the East and West Coasts. Industry sources told Inter@ctive
Week that the cut was accidentally made by an unidentified gas company in
Ohio around 12:30 EST today. The news is sending shockwaves through the
networking community, with many carrier operators struggling to understand
why, all of a sudden, their traffic is routed through London and Denmark.
At least four Internet service providers are being affected by the outage.
Various online sources have named AboveNet; GTE Internetworking; and MFS
Communications, a WorldCom subsidiary, as ISPs hit the worst. (Read the
remainder of the article at the above link.)

about the here and now. A Special Newsweek report." The issue covers
topics that include The Dawn of E-Life, Business and Shopping, Politics,
Internet Privacy, Communication, Education, Health & Science, A Few of

- Select domain names continue to sell for
high prices. Drugs.com reportedly sold for more than $270,000.
Wallsteet.com sold for more than $1,000,000. Compaq, owner of
altavista.digital.com, paid $3.35 million for the name AltaVista.com for
its AltaVista search engine.
- August 6, 1999
- Shares of America Online fell 4 percent on
concern that Microsoft will cut or eliminate its Internet access fees in a
move that could hurt AOL's revenue.
Microsoft currently offers free HotMail
E-mail, viewable from a browser and allowing attachments HotMail
and is now giving away free 12MB "consumer" home pages MSFT
Free Consumer pages. Note: We couldn't resist signing up to check it
out. Our quickie template page is located at Dale's
Page.
Drawbacks to Microsoft's offerings include
having to go to a browser for E-mail as opposed to being able to check all
E-mail from an E-mail system. It is our opnion that ISP's have better
offerings and software tools such as CGI scripts.
Update - http://www.altavista.com is
offering free Internet Service. Please see our Bulletin
Board for details.

- IDC reports
that Internet Commerce Will Rocket to More Than $1 Trillion by 2003.
According to IDC Web Usage and Internet Commerce Are Becoming Less
U.S.-Centric. "Because of the increase in the number of people who
make purchases over the Web, the growth of the average transaction size,
and the adoption of the Web as a viable vehicle for business procurement,
Internet commerce will grow substantially," said Carol Glasheen,
director of primary research and market models at IDC. According to IDC,
the number of users who make purchases over the Web will jump from 31
million in 1998 to more than 183 million in 2003. Furthermore, there is
ample opportunity to expand the 183 million as it will represent only 36%
of all Web users." See the remainder of the article at the above
link.

- American Lawyer Media Network Law News
reports A growing torrent of frivolous litigation sanctions imposed on
Albany attorney Andrew F. Capoccia reached flood tide when Albany City
Judge Leslie E. Stein awarded sanctions totalling $850,000 in 87 separate,
but similar, debt collection cases last week. In one order, Judge Stein
cited sanctions imposed on Mr. Capoccia by judges across the state, and
said the penalty was necessary to deter "a pattern of conduct by the
Capoccia Law Firm which exhibits a complete disregard for the judicial
system, in tying up its limited resources and preventing the system from
addressing legitimate disputes, by bombarding it with meritless claims and
defenses, apparently as some sort of tactic, the aim of which is to coerce
settlement from the adversaries of its clients."
- June 7, 1999
- Timex
reports that its two-year-old Web site was originated in order to display
its almost 300 watches. Advantages obtained included the ability to show
more watches than their stores could display and "huge margins."
Start-up costs were less than $100,000 with sales of $6,000,000, doubling
annually in an industry that has been relatively stagnant. Editor: I find
this interesting. Where else could they spend $100,000 and achieve these
results as well as miniscule on-going maintenance costs.
- June 7, 1999
