Consultwebs.com E-mail Address Used By
Spammer
A Spammer used Consultwebs.com's e-mail
address for more than 24-hours to target AOL users for unsavory e-mail.
We surmise that the Spammer had captured an AOL e-mail account list. More
than 10,000 AOL rejected e-mails from the Spammer were returned to
Consultwebs.coms. Thousands more were received by AOL users (we
received some angry remove e-mails.) The Spammer uses an AOL address
for the mailing and has a Yahoo address on its Web site. AOL and
Yahoo did not respond to requests by us for action regarding the Spammer.
Action was taken independently of Yahoo and AOL. This type of abuse
has apparently become very common as malicious Spammers have learned to
utilize Web server e-mail systems.

Home Depot invests in the Web
The do-it-yourself retailer, Home Depot, is
expanding its online-ordering unit. The company views its Web site as a
way for customers to learn more about its products, while the stores learn
more about customers' buying habits. A story by
ERIC YOUNG, THE INDUSTRY STANDARD (April 27,
2001) and Computerworld
stated that after
initial caution about the Internet, do-it-yourself leader The Home Depot
Inc. is pushing further into e-commerce, even as the massive retailer
seems to be toning down expectations about the benefits of a Web presence.
The article continued, "While yesterday's announcement shows Home
Depot making a bigger investment in the Web, the company is hardly an
Internet trailblazer. When many competitors were devising Net strategies
in 1999 and 2000, Home Depot didn't give e-commerce much of a thought.
"We don't feel compelled to be the first kid in the deep end of the
pool," spokesman Don Harrison said."

The
Martindale Mutiny: Sidley Throws the Directory Overboard
A recent article by respected legal writer Wendy
Liebowitz, Esq., discussed Chicago's Sidley & Austin, one of the
nation's ten largest firms, recently becaming the first major law firm to
decide not to list its 900 laywers in Martindale-Hubbell's Law Directory,
the country's 130-year old directory of lawyers. Another large Chicago firm,
Schiff Hardin & Waite, is scaling back, but not eliminating, its
listing. These actions are shots across the bow of a major traditional legal
publisher--Martindale is a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. -- which is
struggling to confront electronic publishing: demands for customized
listings, self-published Web sites, and a proliferation of inexpensive,
Internet-only directories targeted at niche areas. See the article on
Mr. Liebowitz's Wendy
Tech Web site.
