There are various side effects associated with the use of Neurontin. These side effects can occur if Neurontin was prescribed for non-approved medical conditions or if Neurontin was properly prescribed.

Adverse Effects when Neurontin is Prescribed for "Off Label" Illnesses
When Neurontin is prescribed for illnesses for which it was not approved or endorsed, serious and sometimes life-threatening side effects can occur, including:

  • suicide / suicide attempt
  • viral infections
  • convulsions
  • memory loss
  • nausea

Side Effects in Adult Epileptic Patients
The following adverse effects were frequently observed in adult and adolescent epileptic patients:

  • fatigue / malaise
  • hypertension / anxiety
  • digestive disorders: anorexia, gas, gingivitis
  • easily bruised
  • dizziness
  • pneumonia
  • abnormal vision
  • hostility

Side Effects when Neurontin is Prescribed for Epilespy in Pediatric Patients...
The primary concern when Neurontin is prescribed for epileptic disorders in children (>12 yrs) is the interaction with other medications. The most commonly observed adverse events associated with the use of Neurontin® in combination with other antiepileptic drugs in patients >12 years of age include:

  • viral infection
  • fever
  • nauseau
  • drowsiness / somnolence
  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • ataxia

Gabapentin / Neurontin use in pediatric patients with epilepsy 3–12 years of age is also associated with the occurrence of Neuropsychiatric
 related adverse events. The most significant of these can be classified into the following categories: 1) emotional lability (primarily behavioral problems), 2) hostility, including aggressive behaviors, 3) thought disorder, including concentration problems and change in school performance, and 4) hyperkinesia (primarily restlessness and hyperactivity). Among the gabapentin-treated patients, most of the events were mild to moderate in intensity.

WARNING:
Avoid stopping this medicine suddenly. If this medicine is discontinued it should be done gradually over a period of one week, under strict medical supervision.
