Gastroenteritis: An inflammation of the
stomach and intestine resulting in diarrhea, with vomiting and cramps when
irritation is excessive. When caused by an infectious agent, it is often
associated with fever.
Germicide: A substance formulated to kill
germs or microorganisms. The germicidal properties of chlorine make it an
effective disinfectant.
Giardia Lamblia: Flagellate protozoan
which is shed during its cyst stage into the feces of man and animals. When
water containing these cysts is ingested, the protozoan causes a severe
gastrointestinal disease called Giardiasis.
Grain Loading: The rate at which particles
are emitted from a pollution source. Measurement is made by the number of grains
per cubic foot of gas emitted.
Ground Water: The supply of fresh water
found beneath the Earth's surface, usually in aquifers, which supply wells and
springs. Because ground water is a major source of drinking water, there is
growing concern over contamination from leaching agricultural or industrial
pollutants or leaking underground storage tanks.
