Percutaneous Kidney Biopsy: Done by inserting a long needle through the back to remove a sample of kidney tissue. The tissue sample can then be sent to a laboratory and examined under a microscope to help a doctor determine the condition of the kidney and look for signs of infection or other diseases. The two kidneys are located on either side of the spine, in the lower back. They help regulate the balance of water, salts, and minerals in the blood. The kidneys also filter waste products from the blood to form urine. A kidney biopsy may be done to evaluate suspected kidney problems or abnormal results from kidney function tests, such as blood and urine tests, ultrasound, or a CT Scan. If kidney cancer is suspected, a biopsy may not be done because of the possible risk of spreading the cancer.
