You can learn more about how search engines work, search engine / SEO / SEOP strategies for your business and Web promotion at PromoteWebs.com. Our summaries and opinions follow. Our search engine submission links are listed below.
Google reportedly owns 48% of the search engine marketplace. Yahoo owns 21% and MSN owns 12%,
Google Google is an extremely impressive search engine; the best in our opinion. Google is the leader in the number of pages indexed; currently listing 8 billion pages searched. Google includes link popularity in its ranking algorithms. Google does not charge for submissions or listings, a factor which helped increase its dominance over other search engines. Google does offer sponsor links and Ad words which appear unobtrusively on the right side of the returned pages. Google's Ad Partners that display Google ads include AOL, Netscape, CompuServe, Infospace (Excite, Dogpile, WebCrawler, MetaCrawler), Ask Jeeves, Ask Jeeves Kids, Teoma Dealtime, AT&T WorldNet and EarthLink.
Google is the spillover and default search engine for numerous search engines and directories. Google offers a clutter-free, attractive and fast search engine. Google is a public company and is very profitable. Google is one of the only search engines that permits Web site owners to place an ad-free search box on their site as illustrated below.
MSN MSN is a very good search engine. It is important due to Microsoft's prominence and because it is the default for many Microsoft users. MSN is also the default when a user types a name into the IE 5 browser address window (e.g., "consultwebs" versus "www.consultwebs.com".) MSN released its new search engine in 2005. More than 5 billion Web pages have been indexed.
Yahoo Yahoo developed and began using its own search engine in 2005. It has previously used Google's results. Yahoo is second to Google in visitor popularity and number of "hours spent on the Internt." It is helpful for businesses to be listed in Yahoo.
AltaVista Altavista was purchased by Overture. Overture was purchased by Yahoo. Altavista was once a search engine leader, but its marketshare has diminished greatly.
Excite Excite is a property of Ask Jeeves and has been a subject of media discussion regarding its potential for survival.
InfoSeek / Go.com InfoSeek is not highly regarded, but has good directory information. On January 29, 2001, 1-29-01, Walt Disney stated that it was closing its money-losing Internet operation GO.com. See CNNfn.com for an article discussing the closing.
AOL AOL uses Google as a source for its search engine.
SavvySearch SavvySearch is a decent metasearch (often called megasearch) engine, better than most. Our experience has been that individual search engines provide better quality returns than metasearch engines. Certain metasearch engines often give paid listings search engine results higher rankings, however, SavvySearch does not seem to do so.
Lycos Lycos has some innovative techniques and continues to be a decent search engine.
WebCrawler WebCrawler provides results from several search engines.
Deja News News Groups - Great place to find new and unusual info.
AllTheWeb A search engine, serviced by Yahoo, featuring tabbed categories such as Web Page, News, Pictures, Videos, MP3 Files, FTP Files.
