About Us
The Acupuncture Alternative was founded by Karen Johnson, who
first became interested in the medical procedure while at student at Georgetown
University in the late Seventies. After graduating from nursing school, Johnson
chose to study acupuncture full time.
Johnson received her Masters in Acupuncture in 1994 from the Traditional
Acupuncture Institute in Columbia, Md. After passing the national board exams,
Johnson received her state license and opened her practice.

The medical procedure known as acupuncture originated in China more than 2,000
years ago. The term describes a family of procedures involving stimulation of
anatomical points on the body by a variety of techniques.
Acupuncture has grown in popularity in the United States from the 1980s onward,
and is practiced by thousands of physicians, dentists, acupuncturists and other
practitioners for relief or prevention of pain and for various other health
conditions. According to the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, an estimated
8.2 million U.S. adults had ever used acupuncture, and 2.1 million had used it
in the previous year.
