Raptiva News Alerts
Raptiva, also known as efalizumab, is an injectable psoriasis treatment manufactured by Genentech. Raptiva is designed to treat chronic moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. It works by affecting T-cells and decreases function of the immune system which increases susceptibility to infections.
Raptiva carries a black box warning from the FDA because of the risk of life-threatening infections.
On February 2009, the FDA announced three confirmed and one possible case of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) in long term Raptiva patients. Three of these patients died from the disease.
PML is caused by a virus that affects the central nervous system. It generally occurs in people with weakened immune systems, most often transplant patients, or people suffering from cancer or AIDS. PML can be fatal, with a low chance of survival. People who do overcome PML still suffer permanent neurological damage.
The FDA has advised doctors to monitor patients taking Raptiva for any signs of PML. Symptoms include: unusual weakness, loss of coordination, changes in vision, difficulty speaking, and personality changes.
